Life goes on...

I'm in another one of my idealistic moods, so beware if you plan to continue reading. So Bush is the winner of 4 more years as president of the United States of America. My first thoughts are of disgust and disappointment. After watching the debates for the first time in my life, and seeing Bush's demeanor, I don't understand how ANYONE could vote for that man. I'm tired of this convervative death shroud that is running our country into the ground. Didn't we leave England to get away from that crap in the beginning? Now we are becomming another England. Why do we need assault weapons? Why can't a woman choose if she wants? And just when the hell are we going to have someone in office that will fix our education system? I know now more than ever that our biggest problem in America, is that our educational system is a worthless steaming pile of cow dung.

Having said that, its over. Bush won, for better or worse, till death when we all go our separate ways. I did the best I can possibly do, and now I have to continue doing that. Nothing changes with a defeat, just as nothing should change with a victory. Emotions run a little, but then we remember that theres always another game.

I guess the thing that scares me the most is not that Bush is the president, but that the majority voted for him. That means he is a decent representative of the country. THAT is what really scares me. But then what is there to be scared of? None of this is real anyway, right? We are all nothing, and this is nothing, so why worry about it?

The sun will still rise tomorrow...

  • What scares me is the absence of checks and balances between the Executive Branch and the Congress. With the current situation in the Supreme Court will we also lose that check during the next 4 years? Will we continue to erode the public's freedoms in the name of protection from terriorism? Will the President in his call for unification of the Nation, represent all of the peoples of the United States or will his expectation be that everyone will fall in line behind his ideology and the "Corporate" power structure created during the last 4 years? These are the things I think about.
I must admit though that I am optimistic. This is a great country and we can survive even this. I truly believe that the Presidency is a hero making job. During their first term in office politicians worry about reelection and their good buddies. During their second and last term the enormity of the job and their desire to be remembered in a favorable light help them to make the hard decisions in the best interest of the Country. This proposition henges on the premise that the man in the White House actually leads the Country and does not allow his staff, the Chaneys, Rumsfelds, etc., to rule in his stead. We will have to wait and see.
I believe we need to fix our election process. I found myself voting against candidates rather than for them. The first thing we need to do is fix the primary system so that all Americans have a say on who the candidates for president will be. God forbid that an incombent President would not be his party's nominee, but how do you account for the fact that only one candidate remains in the race after the first 3 or 4 primaries. Why do we even have a nominating conference? I hope some smart people will start brainstorming and find a way for all Americans to participate in the process with real input and not just in appearance only.

I've said too much. Hang in there. The future is what "you" make it.
